The Blood of a Believer

“By telling you anything at all I’m at least believing in you,
I believe you’re there, I believe you into being.”

—Margaret Atwood’s
  “The Handmaid’s Tale”

And thus the story went
that he drained her then—
when he saw understanding bloom in her eyes.
The monster rose and took his place among us.
For she was gone.
And none but another of his kind
could end his destruction.
And thus the story went.

Now our story goes
that I saw the monster embrace you.
And you smiled then,
safe in the satisfaction
that none was so like him
as could cause you harm.
But I opened my secret escape.
I rose and took my place among them.
For he was gone then
and none but another of my kind
can end my destruction.
